Can you help?

Sophie continues her research into the history of florcloths and linoleum, and would like to hear from anyone who knows anything on this subject.

The picture shows a painted sailcloth mat discovered at Port Maitland, Nova Scotia dating from c. 1910. The picture was kindly sent me by Des Pawson of the Museum of Knots & Sailor's Ropework in Ipswich.
It was painted by an unknown sailor.

The connection between floorcloths and the nautical is strong, and sailors would often while away long hours at sea painting floorcloths.
