Introduction

Sophie Sarin has been creating painted floor canvasses since 1990. Based on the historical floorcloths or oilcloths which were the ancestor of linoleum, Sophie's floor paintings have spanned a large variety of commissions.

These range from traditional floors in historical settings such as Kenwood House, London to her recent Bauhaus inspired Art Deco floor for the University of London Library at Senate House.

Sophie is an expert on the history of floorcloths and linoleum. She has published an M. Phil. dissertation on the subject with the History of Design Department at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the RCA.
